Opinion: Why LHHS needs to invest in clean water

Many students at Lake Highlands High School think that our school should invest in reusable water bottle fountains that have a separate fountain for the option of filling up your water bottle.

Some benefits would be:

No lead contamination

The majority of stations use high-performance filters that remove common contaminants such as chlorine and lead. One of the leading water bottle filling station manufacturers, Elkay, offers filtered water bottle filling stations that remove, on average, 99.3 percent of lead from drinking water.

Better tasting water

Many people at our school don’t like our water fountain water because it’s usually lukewarm temperature and has an unsavory flavor. However, filtered water bottle filling stations are equipped with high-performance filters and cooling systems.

Healthier hydration

Instead of spending money on getting more vending machines, we could spend more money on getting water fountains that give us actual clean water. On Oct. 8, the band students couldn’t fill up their water jugs because the water was contaminated.

Reduction of waste

While bottled water is an easy way to encourage people to drink water, the long-term environmental costs paint a much bleaker picture. About 80 percent of plastic bottles end up in the dump, only to be burned or end up in the landfill.

Investing money on water fountains would not only benefit the students and teachers, but it would also benefit the environment.
